MATRIPHAGE is a project by the AWA collective. During the pandemic, the musicians are looking for an outlet for topics such as ignorance, truth, despair, isolation, depression, death — and time; our time.

Ideas for riffs and lyrics emerge in the family environment. The writing finally leads to songs and an album – musically inspired by classic 70s rock, contemporary jazz, blues and black metal – lyrically about the human abyss.

AWA Collective

AWA was founded in 2014 in Freiburg, Southern Germany as a band project. The musical direction is rooted in the sound of Post/Doom/Sludge Metal with lyrics and attitude that are misanthropic, dystopian, nihilistic and elegiac.

Over time AWA expanded from a band project to an experimental collective, welcoming fellow artists into their creative space.

The musicians have played or are currently playing in bands such as Fear my Thoughts, Trypticon, Thron, Father Ed, Ira, Abgelehnt, Karli Cops, Giant Sleep, Pigeon Toe, Hellcall and Earthlimb.

In AWA they come together in improvised jams with various configurations. Atmosphere and spontaneity determine the genre played from project to project. Song ideas and sketches are based on collaborative jams allowing for an unprepared, free, and unpredictable approach that generates extraordinary energy. However, it also requires each member to be open to compromise and embrace the collective concept.

From the AWA Collective the following projects have emerged:

  • Mention — 2017
  • Matriphage — 2021
  • hærbst — 2023

About

At the nihilistic gates of slumber and sludge, an unholy mystery deforms and degenerates not only the ones who believe, but also those who are cursed with false blessings and vapid booze.

If you transcend in nebula and haze, it´s the liquid abyss in which you will gaze and the sound you will hear, is the perversion you fear – relentless and with no drinks to spare. Dry-sober and with clear sight you will not hear what is meant to be found between the lines.

So go on and pray to your gods – they will not get you drunk.

Fill your cups for eternity and avoid the dark corners of the castle – or be prepared to go beyond all you know with the four whoresmen, the Assis With Attitude.
